Information needed for a business plan

The following process has been developed to facilitate your ability to formulate your life vision and business plan - so that it is aligned, congruent and robust. As you take the time to answer and complete each question, it empowers you to explore the underlying attitudes that govern the various facets of your field, business and self, thereby uncovering the information needed prior to creating a well-formed business plan.

Intentions:

  • What is the primary purpose of this business?
  • What do I want in and from this business?
  • When I get that, what will that give me?
  • What is the vision for this business?
  • What is the biggest vision I have for this business?
  • What's important to me about being in business?
  • What are my business values?
  • What standards do I want to live up to and fulfil?
  • What do I want to achieve in six months, one year, 3 years, 5 years, 10 years?
  • How do my business intentions, visions and values fit with my personal mission, vision and values?


Business Domain:

  • What are the domains that my business interacts with? (Corporations, Individuals, etc.)
  • What are the services and products that this business offers?
  • What is distinctive and unique (USP) about this business that makes it a viable commodity in the world?
  • What is unique and special about our services and products?
  • What do I know about the services and products of our competitors?
  • What do I know about management processes, contracting, negotiating, HR, etc?
  • What critical knowledge or skills sets the pace for being cutting edge in the domain I'm engaging?
  • What are the trends in this field? Where is it going?
  • What are the professional associates that influence this field?
  • What will I charge for my products and services?
  • What are the risks in this field? In this business?
  • What are the opportunities in this field?
  • What are the weaknesses that I need to address?
  • What insurance's do I need? Memberships?
  • What are the legalities of this field?
  • What is the legal structure needed for this business?


Business Principles:

  • What does this business mean to me? To others? To my clients and customers? To my competitors?
  • What meanings do I give to the products and services?
  • How meaningful do I find it to be engaged in this business?
  • What does this business and its products mean to my customers that turn them into loyal customers?
  • What is my financial model and what meanings do I hold about that?
  • What is my people model as I expand my business and what does that mean to me?
  • What is my sales and marketing model for creating referrals and networks?
  • What frames of meaning do I bring to my business throughout the work day and in interaction with employees, customers, etc?
  • What does this business mean to me in the context of my life?


Business Culture:

  • What are the primary states of this business?
  • What states make up the "feel" of this business?
  • What do I want to feel when I go to work, engage in sales, meet with a client, etc?
  • What culture do I want to plan for and develop in this business?
  • What attitudes dominate this field?
  • What attitudes will I cultivate that will set my business apart?
  • What feelings, attitudes, moods are commonly associated with my business?
  • What states do I plan to induce myself into in doing this work? My clients? My employees / employer? My suppliers?


Business Identity:

  • Who are you at this business?
  • What is the identity of the entity of your business? How positive, negative or neutral is this?
  • How does this affect the growth of the business?
  • What roles does your business need?
  • What roles do you play in the business? How many hats do you wear in the business? (Owner, Partner, Salesperson, Negotiator, Accountant, Secretary, etc)
  • Who do you want to be at business?
  • What is the best business identity that you can imagine?
  • How do you want others to see you as a business person?
  • Do you have permission to be seen as successful, to position yourself in a positive way?
  • What's your business logo?
  • What is the title I hold for myself? (Executive, Director, etc)
  • What will be on your business card?


Business Resources:

  • What are your best business resources or assets?
  • What are the resources and skills that you need to profitably run this business? (Accounting, selling, contracting, hiring, firing, etc.)
  • What capital do you have and what do you need to expand your business in the coming years?
  • What intellectual capital do you need to develop?
  • What relationship (or people) capital do you need?
  • What financial capital do you need to start, to expand, etc?
  • How much capacity do you need to fill in order to pay your expenses (overhead)?
  • How much capacity do you need to fill to earn an income that supports your lifestyle?
  • What are the liabilities of the business?
  • What plans do you have for effectively handling the liabilities?


Business Relationships:

  • Who do you want to reach with your products and services?
  • Who is your ideal customer?
  • What relationship skills do you need to build your business?
  • How do you want to communicate with your existing clients?
  • How do you want to communicate with your prospective clients? (Birthday cards, websites, Newsletters, etc.)
  • What developments do you need to make to enhance your skills at negotiation, persuasion, influence, profiling employees, etc?
  • What development and incentive plan will you offer your employees?
  • What networking groups and associations are critical to your success in business?
  • Who are the people who will be this business' biggest advocates?
  • How are you going to use publicity?
  • Whose businesses do you want to support?
  • What systems do you have for getting client feedback and testimonials?


Business Scheduling:

  • Where am I going with this business? Where do I want to go?
  • What does the future hold for this business?
  • Where do I want to see this business in 3 years, 5, 10, 20 years?
  • What specific plans have I established for this business?
  • What business or other responsibilities do I need to end to be present in this business?
  • How much time will I spend working on the business and how much time working in the business?
  • What scheduling do I need to maximise my available capacity?
  • When will I take vacations, training courses, etc?
